Gift Shuffle – Secret Santa is a WordPress plugin from BeeClear — an agency that also builds plugins and mobile apps. The plugin draws gift pairs with a single click, but its most interesting part starts after the draw. Each pair gets an anonymous chat, where the recipient doesn’t know who’s writing to them. That lets you ask about a size or a favorite color without giving away the surprise. See how this mechanism works and how to set it up for your team.

Why does asking about a gift ruin the Secret Santa surprise?
Asking about a gift ruins the Secret Santa surprise because a question asked directly gives away who drew whom. One “what size do you wear?” over coffee is enough for the whole game to lose its point. That’s why many people don’t ask at all and just buy blind. The result is often predictable: another mug, a candle, or socks that have nothing to do with the recipient’s interests.
The other option is a go-between, usually the event organizer. That person collects questions, passes on answers, and knows every pair. That’s a lot of work and plenty of chances for an accidental slip-up. It’s better when the secret Santa and the recipient talk directly, with anonymity guaranteed by the plugin itself.
How does the anonymous chat in Gift Shuffle work?
The anonymous chat in Gift Shuffle works from the participant panel in the WordPress dashboard and opens two conversation windows. The first is for contacting the person you’re gifting. The second connects you with your own secret Santa — someone whose identity you don’t know. Both conversations wait on the same screen, and messages show up as bubbles with the time sent, with no author name attached.
The whole thing feels like an ordinary messenger. You type text and send it with a button or the Enter key. The windows refresh on their own every few seconds, so new replies appear without reloading the page. Here’s how exchanging gift information changes:
| Area | Gift exchange without chat | With Gift Shuffle |
|---|---|---|
| Asking about size or color | gives away the sender, or needs a go-between | reaches the recipient anonymously, directly |
| Recipient’s reply | through the organizer, or not at all | in the same chat window |
| Wish list | circulated by hand | saved in the dashboard as hints |
| New message notification | none | an email with a link to the panel |
Who can see who you’re chatting with on the Secret Santa chat?
On the Secret Santa chat in Gift Shuffle, you only ever see the name of the person you’re gifting. Your own gift-giver stays anonymous, because the plugin shows each person only one side of the pairing. So in the participant view you’ll find out who you’re giving a gift to, but never who’s preparing a gift for you. The same rule applies inside the chat windows.
Gift Shuffle also enforces the boundaries of correspondence on the server side. A message can only be sent to your own recipient or your own Santa. Trying to write to anyone else is refused. So nobody can peek at other people’s pairs or step into someone else’s conversation. The organizer doesn’t have to police anything, because the plugin enforces the rules itself.
How do hints differ from chat messages?
Hints differ from chat messages in that they’re a fixed wish list, not an ongoing exchange. Each participant writes a short note for their own gift-giver. They can list favorite authors, hobbies, or things a gift definitely shouldn’t include. The gift-giver sees these hints right under the recipient’s name.
The two tools complement each other well. The list gives a starting point, and the chat lets you ask for details. When the recipient updates their hints, Gift Shuffle emails their Santa to let them know about the change. The admin can also display the pairing and the hint form on a regular site page by inserting the shortcode [beeclear_secret_santa].
How do participants find out about new messages?
Participants find out about new messages from email notifications sent by Gift Shuffle. The email announces an anonymous message and includes a link to the panel, but never reveals the sender. Each person decides for themselves which notifications they want to receive:
- messages in the correspondence with the person they’re gifting,
- messages from their anonymous Santa,
- new posts in the group chat.
By default all three options are turned on. Anyone who doesn’t want extra email can turn off a given channel with one click. For reliable mail delivery, the plugin’s authors recommend installing an SMTP plugin, for example WP Mail SMTP. So nobody has to check the dashboard every day just in case.
What is the anonymous group chat for?
The anonymous group chat in Gift Shuffle is for a shared conversation among everyone taking part in the game. Everyone automatically gets a nickname made of an adjective and an animal name. Nicknames never repeat, so it’s easy to follow who wrote what without giving away names. It’s a good spot for jokes, questions about the exchange date, and pre-holiday teasing.
Both participants and site administrators have access to the group chat. Whoever’s running the game can use it to remind everyone about the exchange date or the budget. The event details — date, budget and currency — are also visible in every player’s panel.
How does the anonymous chat take the load off the organizer?
The anonymous chat takes the load off the organizer because questions about gifts stop going through their inbox. Pairs sort things out among themselves, and the coordinator doesn’t need to know what they’ve agreed on. That leaves them with preparing the event and keeping track of the deadline. In turn, they have more time to nail down the gift exchange itself.
When something needs to reach everyone at once, the plugin offers a broadcast email to the whole group or to selected people. Messages sent this way land in a saved history. So you don’t have to guess whether a budget reminder already went out. You can adjust window labels and email text on the translations screen to match your company’s language.
What happens to chats after a new draw?
By default, chats are kept after a new draw, separated by a new-round marker with a date. That way last year’s messages don’t mix with the current edition. If you’d rather start with a clean slate, turn on deleting all messages on reassignment or reset in the settings.
Gift Shuffle also handles latecomers. When new people join the game, the plugin draws pairs only for them, without touching existing assignments. This requires at least two new players without a pair. Conversations already started by existing pairs then continue without interruption.
Correspondence doesn’t disappear when the plugin is deactivated, either. Participants, pairings and history stay in the database, unless you turn on data cleanup on deactivation. You can also export chat content along with the player list and configuration to a JSON file. A copy like that comes in handy before the next edition or a move to another site.
How do you set up an anonymous chat for your team?
You set up an anonymous chat for your team in a few steps from the admin side. First, enter the exchange date, budget and email sender name in the settings. Then mark participants among your WordPress users and, if needed, set exclusions — pairs that can’t be matched with each other. One click creates the pairings and sends everyone a message with a link to their panel. Participants log into WordPress, open their panel from the dashboard menu, and immediately see their pairing, hints and both chats.
Chats, exclusions, broadcast emails and notifications require an active Premium license. Want this year’s gifts to actually land well? Check out the Gift Shuffle – Secret Santa plugin page and contact us. We’ll help you set up the draw and tailor it to your event.
