Internal linking without editing content: how Smart Link Manager does it

An old projector casting glowing threads onto the pages of an open book in a dark room – a metaphor for links inserted at page render time
Summarize with AI:

Smart Link Manager is a WordPress plugin that automates internal linking based on phrase rules. It’s built by BeeClear – a marketing agency focused on website SEO and WordPress websites. What sets the plugin apart is the way it inserts links in the first place. Links appear at the moment a page is rendered, and the post content in the database stays untouched. Here’s what you gain from that approach and how to use it day to day.

Links hard-coded into content cause trouble because every change means manually editing posts. When you change the target page for a given phrase, you have to hunt down every occurrence across the site. Removing a link takes the same tedious work. With hundreds of articles, it’s easy to miss something, and every miss stays in the database. Over time, the link structure matches less and less of what you actually want to promote.

An automation tool that writes links straight into content doesn’t solve this. It speeds up the insertion itself, but every mistake still ends up in the database. Undoing it means editing posts again, just at a larger scale. Smart Link Manager takes a different approach.

What does internal linking without editing content actually mean?

Internal linking without editing content means links only get created when the page is rendered. Smart Link Manager never saves them to the database. It only stores rules: a phrase, a target page, and optional rel, title, aria-label attributes and a CSS class. So the post text in the editor looks exactly as the author left it. Only the reader sees the finished link on the page.

The mechanism uses the the_content filter – a standard WordPress hook that post content passes through right before it’s displayed. The plugin intercepts the rendered text there, finds phrases from the rules, and attaches links to them. It handles excerpts and widget text the same way. It works with both the block editor and the classic editor, since both rely on standard content rendering. In Premium, rules pointing to external addresses work exactly the same way.

Smart Link Manager knows where to insert a link thanks to a rule index. The index collects phrases assigned to published posts and pages. You rebuild it with a single click, or automatically after updating a post. Only then do the new settings apply to existing text. Automatic rebuilding conveniently handles frequent publishing, while manual rebuilding lets you choose the moment for changes.

On every page view, the plugin first checks whether at least one phrase from your list appears in the text. If none match, it returns the content without further analyzing the document. Scanning and building the index rely on WordPress’s internal APIs, not loopback requests. So rebuilding doesn’t depend on whether the server allows the site to connect to itself.

After you deactivate the plugin, the generated links disappear immediately, because they never made it into the database. Posts revert to their editor version with no cleanup needed. No orphaned links or traces of old rules are left behind. In the settings, you can also decide whether deactivation should clear the index and counters. A separate uninstall option removes the plugin’s settings, rules, and metadata. Both are off by default, so when you reactivate the plugin, your rules are waiting, ready to go.

You can run a full reset without deactivating the plugin. The data-clearing action resets counters and scan results, then immediately rebuilds the phrase list. A stronger option additionally deletes every saved phrase and starts the configuration from scratch. In neither case does the text of your articles change.

Links don’t break after a URL change because the index stores the target page’s ID, not its full URL. The plugin resolves the address on every page view, pulling the current permalink from WordPress. When you change the slug of the target post, links immediately point to the new address. You don’t have to hunt for old links across the whole site. That’s a big help when you’re cleaning up your URL structure by shortening or fixing slugs.

A domain change works the same way. A site running on a local server, on staging, or in production gets links with whatever host it’s currently running on. That’s how the free edition has behaved since version 2.1.7, and Premium since 2.2.4. You can move rules between environments by importing and exporting a JSON file, without rebuilding the whole set from scratch.

Smart Link Manager never links pieces of content where a link could break something or get in the way of reading. Matching happens on the rendered text, so the plugin enforces boundaries on every page view. Here’s what it sticks to by default:

  • it skips existing links, code blocks, scripts, and styles,
  • it never links a page to itself,
  • it skips paragraphs, headings, and list items shorter than 20 characters,
  • it leaves text shorter than 200 characters alone,
  • it inserts one link to a given target per page,
  • it leaves alone any fragment marked with the beeclear-ilm–no-autolink class.

You can also set boundaries for a specific post. A metabox in the editor lets you disable outgoing links from a given post, or narrow matching down to selected elements, such as paragraphs and lists. By default, the plugin covers posts and pages, and archives only once you enable that option. Every one of these changes takes effect immediately, since none of them require editing content.

You can check where the plugin inserted links in the Link Overview panel. Since the links don’t exist in the database, you won’t find them in the post editor. The target report fills that gap, showing the defined phrases and the number of incoming links to each page. The details window points to the source posts, and the context preview highlights the linked phrase within a snippet of text.

A site scan collects the data for the report. You can run it manually with a single button, or schedule it daily or weekly at a chosen time. The scan processes content in small batches, so it doesn’t load the server all at once. Once it finishes, the panel shows a summary of the last run. The paid Premium tier adds an operations log with a history of rebuilds and linking-settings changes.

How do you change or undo a rule without editing posts?

You can change or undo a rule without editing posts, without opening a single piece of text that contains a link. You edit the phrase in the sortable table or in the target-page metabox, then refresh the index. The very next page view already shows the new linking state. That approach encourages experimentation, since you can roll back a failed attempt just as fast as you made it. Here’s how that plays out in day-to-day work:

AreaLinks saved in contentWith Smart Link Manager
Changing a phrase’s targetedit every post that contains the linkfix one rule and rebuild the index
Removing linksmanually clean up postsdelete the rule or deactivate the plugin
New target-page slugfix links inside the textthe link resolves to the current address on its own
Moving to another domainrisk of links to the old hostaddress resolved on every page view
Database contenttext with links pasted intext unchanged, rules stored separately

The same principle applies to how links look. You change the rel attribute, the CSS class, or the whole link template in the global settings. The new look immediately applies to every hyperlink on the site, since each one is generated fresh at render time. You never have to fix anything in your older articles.

You can get started with Smart Link Manager using the free version from the WordPress.org directory. Install the plugin, add your first rule with a phrase and a target page, then rebuild the index. Links will appear the next time your articles load. The same mechanism powers Premium. The paid edition adds linking to trusted external addresses, rules with regular expressions, and target priorities. It can also import phrases from Internal Link Juicer without overwriting your existing settings.

You’ll find a comparison of both versions and dashboard screenshots on the Smart Link Manager page. Set your rules once and link without ever touching your content. You can undo any decision just as fast as you made it.
