BeeClear is the maker of this plugin, other WordPress extensions and smartphone apps. Premium 2.3 adds a new feature. The AI connector links the plugin to an assistant such as Claude, Codex, Gemini or ChatGPT, so you manage linking in a conversation. Instead of clicking through the meta boxes of one page after another, you write a request and the model checks the rules and makes the changes. Below we explain how the connector works, what it can do and how to switch it on safely.

What is the AI connector in Smart Link Manager?

The AI connector in Smart Link Manager is an MCP server built into the Premium version of the plugin. MCP stands for Model Context Protocol, an open standard for connecting AI assistants to external tools and data. The model receives a list of described tools from the connector and then calls them on your behalf. Each tool matches one action from the plugin dashboard, for example reading the rules of a page or changing a link limit. The server runs on the WordPress REST API at /wp-json/beeclear-slm/v1/mcp and is switched off by default.

For you this means a conversation instead of clicks. You say what you want to achieve with internal linking, and the AI picks the right tools and reports what it changed. The connector does not bypass the plugin – every change passes the same safeguards as the dashboard forms.

Which AI assistants does the connector work with?

The connector works with any assistant that supports remote MCP servers over the Streamable HTTP transport. The plugin ships ready-made instructions for six clients, and they differ mainly in how the token is passed. Command-line tools take the token in the Authorization header. Web and desktop apps get a secret connector URL with the token in its path instead. This is how it looks in practice:

AI assistant

How it connects

Where you add the connector

Claude Code

Authorization header with the token

the claude mcp add command in a terminal

Codex CLI

token in an environment variable

codex mcp add or the config.toml file

Gemini CLI

Authorization header with the token

gemini mcp add or the settings.json file

claude.ai and Claude Desktop

secret connector URL

Settings – Connectors – custom connector

ChatGPT

secret connector URL

developer mode in the app settings

The plugin generates every command and configuration snippet itself, with the address of your site. All you need is the “Copy” button next to the client you use.

What does the AI assistant check in your internal linking?

The AI assistant checks everything in your internal linking that you see in the Smart Link Manager dashboard. The connector gives the model an index overview with the number of phrases and target pages, the index rebuild status and the result of the latest scan. The AI reads the global settings, the external link rules and the rules and settings of any page or post. It also finds a page by its title or address, so you do not have to look up its ID.

The link report from the latest overview scan is the most useful part. For a given page the model sees incoming, outgoing and external links together with the phrases that created them. Without a page it gets a ranking of targets by the number of incoming links. From this material it is easy to spot pages that automatic links skip, or phrases that never match your content. The activity log completes the picture with the history of changes and rebuilds.

What changes can the assistant make to pages and settings?

The assistant makes changes only when it has a token with write access. Without it, the connector works as a report reader. On pages it adds new phrase rules, removes existing ones or replaces the whole list. It blocks outgoing links and sets the link cap for a page, its priority and the allowed HTML tags. In the global settings it changes, among other things, link attributes, the per-page link limit and the elements skipped by linking. After a change it starts the index rebuild itself and, on request, the overview scan too.

The AI adds, edits and deletes external link rules. To edit or delete one it must give the current phrase of that rule. This way it cannot change another item by mistake after the list has shifted. A few requests to start with:

show the pages with linking rules and their phrases,

add the phrase “internal linking” as a rule on the plugin page,

block outgoing links on the terms of service and privacy policy pages,

allow at most eight automatic links per page and rebuild the index,

list the pages with the fewest incoming links after the latest scan.

How do you switch on the AI connector in WordPress?

You switch on the AI connector in the WordPress dashboard, on the Smart Link Manager – AI connector screen. The whole setup takes a few minutes and needs no file editing. The steps are:

Click “Enable AI connector” to open the MCP endpoint of your site.

Create a token for the assistant and pick the access: read only, or read and write.

Copy the token or the secret URL – the dashboard shows it only once.

Add the connector in your AI client following the instructions on the screen.

Ask the chat for a Smart Link Manager overview to test the connection.

The same screen also has a curl command for a manual connection test. A working connector answers with the server name and the plugin version.

Is the AI connector safe for your website?

The AI connector is designed so that the model has only the permissions you grant. Each client gets its own token, and the database stores only its hash. A token is valid only while its owner can manage the site settings. You revoke it with one click, and the token table shows when it was last used. A read-only token does not even see the write tools.

Every change made by the AI lands in the activity log with the token name. The AI cannot purge the plugin data, import a settings file or change the data cleanup options on uninstall. One more detail is worth remembering. The secret URL contains the token and may end up in server logs, so where your client supports it, choose the Authorization header.

How is the AI connector different from WebMCP on your site?

The AI connector differs from WebMCP in who it serves and what it may do. WebMCP AI Visibility is a separate BeeClear plugin that exposes the public content of a site to AI agents browsing it. Such an agent reads posts, navigation and forms, but changes nothing in the dashboard. The connector in Smart Link Manager works on the other side – it serves the site administrator and their trusted assistant. It needs a token, runs with the rights of an account that can manage settings and changes the plugin configuration.

Both build on the same idea of tools described for a language model. The first helps your site stay visible to AI search, the second speeds up work on the site itself. You can use them side by side, as they do not get in each other’s way.

Who benefits most from the AI connector?

The AI connector helps most those who manage linking across many pages at once. An SEO specialist asks for a rule review and gets a ready summary instead of opening meta boxes page by page. An agency sets up a rule set on a new client site faster. A blog owner checks which posts get no links without learning every plugin option.

The AI connector is part of Smart Link Manager Premium since release 2.3.0. You can try Premium for three days, and pricing details and the comparison with the free version are on the plugin page. From today your internal linking can talk to the same chat you write your content with.

Smart Link Manager is a WordPress plugin that inserts internal links automatically, based on phrase rules assigned to target pages.
